Trivia Game

2024

INFO

GLOCAL intends to launch an educational, web-based Trivia Game on its digital engagement platform YouCount. The game is designed for a youth audience and although it is primarily intended for classroom use, aims to be engaging enough for users to return, save progress, and improve their scores while learning about Canada and general knowledge topics. Some of the client’s key requirements include the options to register/log in or play as guest, a wide variety of topics presented in different types of questions, and a leaderboard feature.

Gamification Project

— ROLE

Graphic Design

UX/UI Game Design

— DATE

Feb-Mar, 2024

As a volunteer-based project, a fundamental aspect of the process involves gathering and reviewing previous volunteer contributions, in addition to considering the client requirements, before devising a plan.

The project will remain on a volunteer-base once this report is completed, therefore the scope of this part of the process will be to design the first working prototype to run an exploratory Usability Test. After completing the first iteration and running the first test, a second iteration will be made considering only the single-player mode.

NEW FEATURES

The following features were added after completing the lo-fi wireframe while designing the first prototype:

Profile Icon

Waiting Room/Loading Screen

Dashboard

FINDINGS

► The overall aesthetic received positive feedback

► The new features had a positive response

► The display of the questions was well received

► The design of the forms and profile icon was well received

► Some buttons/icons were not clear

► The colour scheme makes it difficult to read, raising concerns about accessibility

OPPORTUNITIES

► Explore ways to implement the colour scheme that does not affect readability and enhance the overall user experience

► Incorporate additional colours to the primary colour palette

► Enhance consistency between enabled and disabled buttons

► Include a ‘Timer’ feature

► Implement a ‘Lives’ system instead of the previous ‘Attempt button’

FINDINGS

► The new colour scheme was well received

► The new aesthetic had a positive response and resonated with the mood

► The loading screen should offer useful information, such as instructions or hints

OPPORTUNITIES

► Imagery, Questions, and Mascot illustrations should be tailored to the game

► The Dashboard should be revised considering scope and new requirements

► ‘Timer’ feature should be revised considering the time per question, impact, and aesthetic

► Screen transitions can be improved to enhance the playfulness

FINAL THOUGHTS

As this project is currently ongoing, the outcomes will reflect the evolving process instead of the final product.

Being a volunteer collaboration, this project fosters continuous feedback from diverse perspectives, enriching the creative process.

With volunteers rotating over time, the project experiences constant growth and adaptation, enabling participants to flexibly respond to varying circumstances and requirements.

NEXT STEPS

As the project is still in very early stages, the next steps may vary based on the timeline, available resources, and volunteers. However, here is a tentative outline of the upcoming milestones:

► Conduct a comprehensive Usability Test on the single-player prototype.

► Evaluate the test results and make the necessary modifications or adjustments.

► Start working on the full prototype, including the questions, imagery, and animations.

► Polish details about the functionality of each feature, such as ‘Lives’
